Construction Industry seminar

Herrington Carmichael’s Construction Industry seminar will focus on two key issues we are regularly asked about at the moment:

  • Employment status
  • Payment terms in construction contracts

Employment status remains a hot topic in the media at the moment with a number of “gig economy” cases being widely published, such as Uber, Deliveroo and Pimlico Plumbers. However, employment status raises the same issues in the construction industry and is likely to be highly relevant to many business due to the widespread use of sub-contractors. It is also an area where HM Revenue and Customs and Trade Unions are looking to challenge employers. In this seminar, Herrington Carmichael’s Robert Frampton will be explaining the issues that employment status can cause and what your business can do to avoid these issues.

In relation to the issue of payment terms, all construction contracts must include certain provisions in order to comply with legal requirements. If your contracts do not include the required clauses then certain terms will be implied into your contract taking control of the payment process away from you. If you are in the construction industry it is key to understand the legal requirements and the payments terms in order to ensure your payment terms are as you intend them to be.

Importantly any involvement you have in the construction of a property/building can result in you being part of the construction industry, even if you are only undertaking minor design works or even something as minor as painting the building! Therefore this seminar will be of interest to anyone who has any involvement whatsoever in the construction industry.

The seminar will take place on 18th April 2018 in our Camberley office. Breakfast will be served from 08:30 with the seminar starting at 09:00 and finishing at approximately 10:00.
